Turkish Language Institution

The Turkish Language Association (Turk Dil Kurumu), founded on July 12, 1932 under Atatürk’s directive as the Turkish Language Research Society, is a long-established institution dedicated to revealing the richness and intrinsic beauty of the Turkish language. Its founders—Sâmih Rif’at, Ruşen Eşref, Celâl Sâhir, and Yakup Kadri—were prominent literary figures and members of parliament. The institution’s early mission focused on conducting scientific research on Turkish, collecting linguistic materials, publishing findings, and strengthening the language’s position among world languages.

Three major congresses held in 1932, 1934, and 1936 shaped the institution’s scientific structure and language policies. In 1936, the organization adopted the name Turkish Language Association. Developed under the auspices of Atatürk, the institution continues its work across fields such as lexicography, grammar, compilation, linguistics, and etymology, guiding the study and development of the Turkish language.
